Living sphagnum is a moss of the genus Sphagnum, harvested by hand in Europe from sustainably managed peat bogs.

This manual harvesting preserves the fragile ecosystems of the peat bogs, allowing the sphagnum moss to regenerate naturally. Unlike industrially dried sphagnum moss, the living version retains all its active biological properties.

Upon receipt, store it in a bright, cool, slightly humid place. It will continue to grow and remain usable for several months.

Avoid storing it in a closed bag for too long without light, it may yellow and lose its vitality.

To propagate with live sphagnum moss, start by rehydrating it for 15 minutes in lukewarm water, then gently squeeze out the excess water.

Sphagnum moss creates a humid and aerated environment that stimulates the production of aerial roots. Its naturally acidic pH protects the cutting from fungal infections, the main cause of failure in propagation by cuttings.

For succulents and cacti, avoid pure sphagnum moss which retains too much moisture and would promote root rot.

Yellowing sphagnum moss generally lacks light, while brown sphagnum moss indicates an excess or lack of water.

Living sphagnum moss needs indirect light to remain green and active. Without photosynthesis, it loses its chlorophyll and gradually turns yellow. Browning occurs when it dries out completely or, conversely, when it sits in stagnant water.

To revive it, place it near a window out of direct sunlight and keep it moist but not soggy. Mist it daily rather than watering it heavily.

Even partially browned, sphagnum moss remains usable for your plants. Only black and fragrant sphagnum moss should be discarded, as this indicates advanced decomposition.
