Everything you need to know about Strelitzia augusta - Giant White Bird of Paradise
Is Strelitzia augusta toxic to cats and dogs?
Strelitzia augusta is considered slightly toxic to cats and dogs. The ASPCA classifies bird of paradise (genus Strelitzia, Strelitzia reginae fact sheet) among toxic plants: its ingestion can cause nausea, vomiting, and drowsiness, especially because of the fruit and seeds. Indoors, this fruit is rare, but it is better to prevent your pet from chewing on the leaves. Place it out of reach and consult a veterinarian in case of ingestion.
How tall can an indoor Strelitzia augusta grow?
Indoors, a Strelitzia augusta can reach 2 to 3 m in height over the years, depending on the light, ceiling height, and pot size. In the wild, in South Africa, tree-like Strelitzias grow several meters tall and form a trunk. Here, it is delivered at 160 cm in a 21 to 24 cm pot, or at 180 cm in a 24 to 27 cm pot. Also allow for width: its leaves spread out like a fan.
How to water a Strelitzia augusta?
Water your Strelitzia augusta when the top 3 to 4 centimeters of soil feel dry to the touch. Thoroughly moisten the root ball, then empty the saucer after fifteen minutes. In spring and summer, this means watering about once a week; in winter, every 10 to 15 days. Its fleshy roots store water: it tolerates being slightly neglected better than overwatering, which turns the leaves yellow and causes root rot.
Does the Strelitzia augusta flower indoors?
The Strelitzia augusta rarely flowers indoors. It requires a mature plant several years old, plenty of light, and often a slightly snug pot to hope for its white flowers with dark bracts. In a very bright conservatory or greenhouse, it is more common. At Plant and Stories, we offer it primarily for its spectacular fan-shaped foliage, which is enough to create a tropical atmosphere all year round.
Why are the leaves of my Strelitzia augusta turning yellow?
Yellowing leaves on a Strelitzia augusta are most often caused by overwatering: the soil remains damp for too long and the roots suffocate. Allow it to dry out more between waterings and check that the pot has drainage holes. An old lower leaf yellowing on its own is normal. If the plant lacks light, the leaves will pale and become smaller: move it closer to a window.
When to repot a Strelitzia augusta?
Repot your Strelitzia augusta every 2 to 3 years in spring when roots emerge from the bottom or deform the pot. Choose a container just slightly wider, heavy and stable, as the plant is tall and catches the wind from the slightest draft. Use a quality multipurpose potting mix with a drainage layer at the bottom. A very full clump can be divided at the time of repotting, with a clean knife.
What is the difference between Strelitzia augusta and Strelitzia nicolai?
Strelitzia augusta and Strelitzia nicolai are two very similar white tree-like bird-of-paradise plants that are grown in the same way. Botanically, Kew Gardens associates the name Strelitzia augusta with Strelitzia alba, a rare species from the southern coast of South Africa, while Strelitzia nicolai grows further east. In the trade, the two names often refer to almost identical plants with large, fan-shaped leaves. Their indoor care is the same.
The essentials about Strelitzia augusta - Giant White Bird of Paradise
Strelitzia augusta: characteristics and benefits
The Strelitzia augusta is one of the tree-like Strelitzia species in the Strelitziaceae family, native to the coastal forests of South Africa. In the wild, these plants grow into true wild banana trees several meters tall. In a pot, it remains a large houseplant, with oblong leaves that can exceed one meter in length. Like the Strelitzia nicolai, it has a fan-shaped growth habit and is grown in the same way. The name Strelitzia augusta, given by Thunberg, is now linked by Kew botanists to Strelitzia alba; in the horticultural trade, it refers to a giant white bird of paradise that is very similar to the Strelitzia nicolai. Its greatest asset is its instant tropical effect: a single plant is enough to fill a living room corner or an office.
Where to place the Strelitzia augusta? Light and location
The Strelitzia augusta requires plenty of light. Place it next to an east-, west- or south-facing window, with a sheer curtain in the height of summer behind a very exposed pane. It enjoys the gentle morning sun. Give it plenty of space: its leaves spread widely and should not rub against a wall. Avoid placing it near a radiator or in cold drafts. In a dark room, it will become leggy and produce smaller leaves. For other large green plants, browse our medium and large houseplants.
How to care for the Strelitzia augusta?
Watering: when the top 3 to 4 centimeters are dry, without water in the saucer.
Light: very bright; gentle morning or evening sun is appreciated.
Temperature: 18 to 27°C, never below 12°C in winter.
Repotting: every 2 to 3 years, in a heavy, stable pot.
Fertiliser: houseplant fertiliser once a month, from April to September.
Why do the leaves of my Strelitzia augusta split?
The split leaves are normal for the Strelitzia augusta. In its natural environment, the blade tears along the veins to let the wind pass through without breaking the plant. Indoors, these splits appear with age, during a move, or when the air is dry. They are not a sign of disease. However, brown, dry edges indicate air that is too dry or irregular watering, and yellow leaves with waterlogged soil indicate overwatering. There is no need to cut off split leaves: they remain decorative.
