About
The substrate that speaks the language of your Calathea
Are your Calatheas looking unhappy despite all your efforts?
Curling leaves, brown tips, slowed growth...
You're not the problem. It's a substrate that doesn't understand
not their needs.
Formulated in France specifically for these temperamental plants,
this substrate maintains constant humidity
without ever suffocating the roots. Exactly what is needed.
Calathea and Maranta are really needed to thrive.
Why choose this substrate?
Regulated humidity: vermiculite retains
and releases water gradually, without excess or dryness .
Protected roots: beneficial fungi
and active microorganisms naturally strengthen the root system.
Sustainable nutrition: fertilizers and trace elements
integrated to feed your plants for 3 to 4 months .
Perfect drainage: the perlite prevents the
water stagnation while keeping the substrate well aerated.
Whether you have your first Calathea or an entire collection,
This substrate can be used directly without any adjustments.
Designed to succeed from the first repotting.
Your Calatheas are waiting for this substrate. Finally, give it to them!
the conditions they need to thrive.
Description
The substrate that meets the needs of Calathea
Our Calathea potting soil is a formulaMade in FranceCombining vermiculite, perlite, and biostimulants. The integrated microscopic fungi increase the roots' absorption capacity for a naturally more resistant plant.
Vermiculite retains just the right amount of moisture. Perlite ensures sufficient drainage. Together, they recreate thetropical conditionswhich the Calathea need.
Benefits
Perfect humidity:Neither dry nor full, the ideal balance
Beneficial mushrooms:root absorption boosted up to x3
Everything you need to know Premium Calathea & Maranta Potting Soil - Enriched with Mycorrhizae and Bacillus - Made in France
What is the exact composition of this Calathea substrate?
This substrate combines vermiculite, perlite, complete fertilizer and trace elements, enriched with beneficial mycorrhizae and Bacillus.
Vermiculite retains moisture while remaining aerated, which Calatheas love. Perlite ensures drainage to prevent root asphyxiation. Live microorganisms establish a symbiotic relationship with the roots as soon as the plant is repotted.
Use this pure substrate, without mixing it with other components, to maintain the balance of the formulation.
Avoid adding sand or garden soil, as this would alter the water retention capacity calibrated for these plants.
How do I repot my Calathea with this substrate?
Choose a pot with drainage holes that is one or two centimeters larger than the current one. Place a layer of substrate at the bottom without an additional drainage layer.
Calatheas dislike root disturbance: gently untangle the roots without forcing them and place the plant at the same level as before. Fill in around the sides, gently firming the soil with your fingers.
Water thoroughly with lukewarm, non-calcareous water to eliminate air pockets and activate mycorrhizae.
Never repot a Calathea when stressed or in winter: favor spring when the plant is actively growing.
Why do Calathea plants need a specific substrate?
Calathea and Maranta originate from humid tropical undergrowth where the soil remains consistently moist without ever becoming waterlogged. Their fine, sensitive roots cannot tolerate either prolonged drought or excessive watering.
A conventional potting mix becomes compacted and retains too much water deep down while drying out on the surface, creating a fatal imbalance. Our substrate maintains consistent moisture throughout the entire depth of the pot.
Mycorrhizae extend the root network and improve phosphorus absorption, which is often a limiting factor in these plants.
Without a suitable substrate, even perfect care will not be enough to make these demanding plants thrive.
My substrate remains waterlogged for too long, what should I do?
A potting mix that doesn't dry out usually indicates a problem with the pot or its environment, not the mix itself. Check that your pot has drainage holes and that the water drains freely.
Calatheas in overly large pots take weeks to absorb available water, which promotes rot. Reduce the pot size if necessary.
Increase indirect light and air circulation to accelerate natural evaporation. Avoid cachepots where water stagnates.
Never leave your plant in a saucer of water for more than thirty minutes after watering, even if it likes humidity.
What other products can this substrate be combined with?
Calatheas thrive in high atmospheric humidity. Ourfine mist sprayallows you to spray the foliage daily without leaving large drops.
From March to September, supplement with ourliquid fertilizerdiluted at half strength every two weeks to support growth without burning sensitive roots.
THEcleaning glovesThey gently remove the dust from the leaves without damaging them.
In case of insufficient light in winter, ourhorticultural lampcompensates for the lack of natural light.
How does it differ from a classic universal potting mix?
Universal potting soil contains mostly peat, which compacts over time, creating dry patches and waterlogged areas. Calatheas do not tolerate this unevenness.
Our substrate incorporates vermiculite and perlite for a stable structure that won't collapse. Water is distributed evenly and the roots breathe continuously.
Live mycorrhizae and Bacillus create a protective ecosystem absent from standard sterilized potting soils. This microbial life helps the plant defend itself and absorb nutrients.
Made in France, guaranteeing the freshness of the microorganisms, which are active as soon as you water for the first time.
The essentials regarding Premium Calathea & Maranta Potting Soil - Enriched with Mycorrhizae and Bacillus - Made in France
What is Calathea and Maranta Premium substrate?
THECalathea Premium substrateThis is a specially formulated growing mix designed to meet the specific needs of Calathea, Maranta, Ctenanthe, and Stromanthe. Made in France from a rigorous selection of balanced organic and mineral materials, this substrate for Marantaceae incorporates microscopic fungi that enhance root absorption, as well as natural microorganisms that strengthen the plant's defenses against soil-borne diseases.
Properties and role of the Calathea substrate in cultivation
THEsubstrate for MarantaceaeIt is formulated to maintain consistent, diffused moisture without ever saturating the roots with stagnant water. Its light, structured texture promotes optimal aeration between waterings, reducing the risk of root asphyxiation—a common problem with potted Calatheas—by up to 40%. Enriched with active biostimulants, it releases nutrients gradually to support growth for several months after repotting.
Which plants benefit from Calathea Premium substrate?
Calathea ornata and makoyana:Moist, well-draining substrate for decorative foliage
Maranta leuconeura:Gentle retention to prevent dry ends
Ctenanthe and Stromanthe:enriched medium for demanding tropical plants
Goeppertia and hybrid species:ideal structure for sensitive roots
Tropical plants in pots, 12 to 17 cm in diameter:successful repotting in the first week
Calathea substrate vs. universal commercial potting soil: what's the real difference?
A standard commercial potting mix is often too compact and drains too well for Calatheas, which are particularly sensitive to both waterlogging and rapid drying. Our Calathea Premium substrate, made in France, is formulated with an appropriate particle size and active biostimulants that support roots weakened during repotting. This specific composition helps prevent the leaf loss typically seen when changing to a substrate unsuitable for these tropical species.
