Blue yucca (Yucca rostrata) - hardy evergreen yucca
Une question ?Nos experts vous répondent01 89 48 03 62
About
Yucca rostrata: the silvery blue sphere that withstands the cold
The Yucca rostrata, or blue yucca, forms a perfectly spherical rosette of thin, silvery blue leaves that shimmer in the sun. Native to the deserts of Texas and northern Mexico, it develops a trunk covered with dry leaves over the years, like a small palm tree. Unlike the indoor yucca, it is very hardy if grown in well-drained soil. It is the ideal graphic plant for a dry garden, a rockery, or a large pot on a sunny terrace.
Foliage: evergreen, thin and rigid silvery blue leaves, ending in a prickly tip.
Exposure: full sun, as hot as possible.
Watering: very little once established; it fears moisture much more than drought.
Animals: toxic to cats and dogs (saponins), pointed leaves.
Hardiness: down to about -15 °C in dry and draining soil.
Packaging, 2 sizes to choose from: in a 30 cm nursery pot, height 70 cm; or with a trunk, in a 27 cm nursery pot, height 70 cm. Without cachepot or decorative container.
A sculptural and very sober yucca, grown and shipped by our partner producer.

Everything you need to know about Blue yucca (Yucca rostrata) - hardy evergreen yucca
Is Yucca rostrata toxic to cats and dogs?
Yes, Yucca rostrata is considered toxic to cats and dogs: the ASPCA classifies yuccas as toxic plants because of the saponins they contain. Ingestion of leaves can cause vomiting, drooling, and digestive upset. Its stiff leaves also end in a sharp point, which can injure the eyes of a curious animal. Keep it out of play areas and handle it with gloves and goggles.
How tall does an adult Yucca rostrata grow?
An adult Yucca rostrata generally reaches a height of 2.5 to 4 m, including the trunk, with a rosette 1 to 1.5 m in diameter. However, it takes many years: its growth is very slow, a few centimeters of trunk per year at best. This is an advantage in a pot, where it retains its shape for a long time. The specimens delivered measure 70 cm, as a rosette in a 30 cm pot or with a trunk already formed.
How to water a potted Yucca rostrata?
Water a potted Yucca rostrata only when the potting mix is dry throughout. In summer, this means watering about every two weeks, more frequently during heatwaves, until water drains from the bottom. From October to March, do not water unless the pot has been completely sheltered from rain for several weeks. Never leave water in the saucer: standing moisture will rot the roots.
Can Yucca rostrata tolerate partial shade?
Yucca rostrata tolerates a few hours of shade, but it is only truly beautiful in full sun. In partial shade, its rosette becomes looser, its leaves lose their silvery-blue color and turn green, and the risk of rot increases because the soil dries more slowly. Reserve for it the sunniest and warmest spot: south-facing rockery, embankment, open terrace. It is not suitable for indoor growing.
Why are the leaves of my Yucca rostrata turning yellow?
The lower leaves of a Yucca rostrata naturally turn yellow and then dry out: this is how it forms its trunk, and you can leave them or cut them off. If the yellowing reaches the heart, overwatering is almost always to blame: clay soil, standing winter rains, or a full saucer. Let it dry out, improve drainage, and stop watering. Brown tips after winter simply indicate a damp chill, nothing serious.
How to plant a Yucca rostrata in the ground?
Plant your Yucca rostrata in spring in full sun. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball, fill the bottom with 10 to 20 cm of gravel, and mix the soil with gravel or pumice. In clay soil, plant it on a mound to improve drainage. Plant the base slightly above ground level, water once, then once a week for a month. Mulch with gravel rather than bark.
What is the difference between Yucca rostrata and Yucca elephantipes?
Yucca rostrata and Yucca elephantipes are two very different yuccas. Yucca rostrata is a hardy outdoor plant, down to around -15°C in dry soil, with thin silvery-blue leaves gathered in a sphere. Yucca elephantipes, or giant yucca, has large, flexible green leaves and cannot tolerate frost: in France, it is grown indoors and only brought outside in summer. Only the rostrata can spend the winter outdoors.
The essentials about Blue yucca (Yucca rostrata) - hardy evergreen yucca
Yucca rostrata: characteristics and benefits
The Yucca rostrata, nicknamed blue yucca or beak yucca, belongs to the Asparagaceae family. It is native to the arid regions of southwestern Texas and northern Mexico, where it grows on limestone slopes and rocky ground. It forms a spherical rosette of hundreds of thin, rigid, bright silvery-blue leaves, each ending in a small point. Over time, it develops a trunk covered with dry leaves and can reach 2.5 to 4 m in height, but its growth is very slow. Mature plants produce a stalk of cream-white bell-shaped flowers in summer. The trunk-bearing version already has its rosette at the top of a short trunk.
Where to plant the Yucca rostrata? Exposure and hardiness
Plant the Yucca rostrata in full sun, in the hottest and driest spot in the garden: a rock garden, embankment, gravel garden, or at the foot of a south-facing wall. It is hardy down to around -15 °C in dry soil, which makes it suitable for planting in the ground in much of France, provided it has perfect drainage. In clay soil that remains wet in winter, grow it on a mound or in a large pot. It pairs perfectly with our Mediterranean plants in a dry garden.
How to care for the Yucca rostrata?
Soil: very well-drained, stony, sandy, or alkaline.
Planting: in spring, on a mound or with a layer of gravel.
Watering: almost none in the ground, sparingly in a pot, and never in winter.
Pruning: none, except removing dry leaves if you want to expose the trunk.
Fertilizing: unnecessary in the ground; in a pot, use a cactus fertilizer in spring.
Why is my Yucca rostrata rotting at the core?
A core that turns black or detaches is almost always caused by water: winter rains that collect in the rosette, waterlogged clay soil, or a pot without drainage. Suffocated roots rot, and the rot spreads up into the trunk. To prevent this, plant the Yucca rostrata on a gravel mound, never water it in winter, and, when growing it in a pot, protect it from prolonged rain. Brown tips on a few leaves, however, are normal after a cold winter and are not a cause for concern. The drying of lower leaves is also part of its growth.
