Everything You Need to Know About Agapanthus 'Albus' (Agapanthus africanus) - flowering perennial - 11 cm pot - Height 25 cm

Is the Albus Agapanthus a perennial or annual plant?

The Albus Agapanthus (Agapanthus africanus) is indeed a perennial plant with fleshy rhizomes that regrows each year from the same rootstock. Unlike an annual, which completes its life cycle in a single season, the agapanthus lives for many years and gradually forms beautiful, increasingly floriferous clumps. Its foliage is deciduous in our temperate climates: it dies back in winter and regrows in spring. It is precisely this perennial nature that makes it a long-lasting garden investment, provided it is protected from winter frost in colder regions.

How hardy is the Agapanthus ‘Albus’? Is it frost-tolerant?

L'Agapanthus albus is classified as semi-hardy: it can withstand short, light frosts down'to around -5°C, but harsh winters will kill it if it i's not protected. When planted in the ground, a thick mulch of 10 to 15 cm around the base is sufficient in regions with mild winters (Brittany, the Atlantic coast, the Mediterranean). In continental or mountainous regions, it is best to grow it in a pot and move it into frost-free shelter between November and late March. Once frozen, the rhizomes will not regrow: winter protection is therefore essential to ensure the plant's survival.

When does the Agapanthus Albus bloom, and how long does the flowering period last?

Agapanthus albus blooms from June to August, sometimes into September depending on sunlight and warmth. Its large pure white umbels, borne on straight 60 to 80 cm stems, open progressively over several weeks, prolonging the decorative effect throughout the summer. The flowering is all the more generous when the plant enjoys maximum sunlight and well-drained soil. By removing the faded stems as they appear, it is sometimes possible to stimulate the growth of new stems and slightly prolong the flowering.

How to plant Agapanthus 'Albus' in a pot or planter on a terrace?

L'Agapanthus albus is an excellent candidate for container cultivation on a sunny terrace or balcony. Choose a container d'at least 30 cm in diameter with a mandatory drainage hole, and place a layer of clay pellets or gravel at the bottom. Use a horticultural potting mix enriched w'ith one-third pumice or coarse sand to ensure excellent drainage. Water regularly in summer, but let the substrate dry out slightly between waterings. I'n winter, move the container into a frost-free shelter (garage, conservatory), as roots exposed in a pot freeze more easily than th'oughground.

Does the Albus Agapanthus attract pollinators?

Yes, 'Agapanthus Albus is a real magnet for summer pollinators. Its large umbels of pure white star-shaped flowers produce abundant nectar and pollen, which primarily attract honeybees and wild bees, but also bumblebees, butterflies, and certain hoverflies. By blooming in the height of 'summer, a time that can sometimes be lean for pollinators, it provides a valuable food source. Adding a few 'Agapanthus Albus plants to a flower bed or terrace makes a practical contribution to supporting biodiversity in the garden, complementing other 'nectar-rich perennials in 'summer.

Can an Agapanthus ‘Albus’ clump be divided, and how should it be done?

Clump division of 'Agapanthus albus' is the simplest and most reliable method of propagation. It is carried out in spring, as soon as new shoots appear at the base, generally between March and April. Carefully remove the clump from the soil or its pot, then separate the rhizomes by hand or with the 'help of a 'garden fork, taking care to leave a good root mass on each division. Replant immediately at the same depth, water thoroughly and maintain regular moisture during the first few weeks. A divided clump generally takes one season to establish before flowering profusely again.

Which plants should be paired with Agapanthus 'Albus' in a summer border?

W'White Agapanthus pairs beautifully with o'ther sun-loving perennials that bloom in summer. Its white umbels blend elegantly with lavender, ornamental sages (Salvia nemorosa), or blue-flowered perovskias, creating a striking graphic contrast. To play with textures, pair it with ornamental grasses such as Stipa tenuissima or miscanthus, whose fine foliage s'complements its ribbon-like leaves perfectly. In a container, it p'airs well with hardy geraniums or osteospermums.

The essentials about Agapanthus 'Albus' (Agapanthus africanus) - flowering perennial - 11 cm pot - Height 25 cm

Agapanthus Albus (Agapanthus africanus): characteristics and benefits

TheAgapanthus Albus (Agapanthus africanus) is a rhizomatous perennial native to South Africa, renowned for its spectacular pure white flower umbels borne on tall flower stalks above dark green strap-shaped foliage. Its architectural form and prolonged summer flowering from June to August make it a reliable choice for sunny beds, borders and large patio containers. It is also highly attractive to pollinators, especially bees and butterflies, making it an excellent choice for any garden committed to supporting biodiversity.

Where to plant Agapanthus Albus? Exposure and hardiness

Agapanthus Albus requires full sun to flower profusely: it is ideally planted in a bright position, sheltered from cold winds, against a south- or southwest-facing wall. It is also perfectly suited to a very sunny patio or balcony in a container, provided excellent drainage is ensured. Discover other perennials and flowering plants for sunny compositions in our selection of full-sun garden plants.

How to care for Agapanthus Albus?

  • Soil: well-drained, light to medium, slightly acidic to neutral; avoid heavy, waterlogged soils, which cause the rhizomes to rot
  • Watering: regular during planting, then reduced once the plant is established; Agapanthus Albus tolerates moderate summer drought well thanks to its fleshy rhizomes
  • Pruning: remove faded flower stalks close to the foliage; divide the clumps every 3 to 4 years in spring to rejuvenate and multiply
  • Exposure: full sun is essential, with at least 6 hours per day; in partial shade, flowering is greatly reduced

Agapanthus Albus in the garden: flowering, foliage and associations

From June to August, Agapanthus Albus produces large umbels composed of dozens of pure white star-shaped flowers on flower stalks that can exceed 60 to 80 cm, creating a striking contrast with the glossy dark green strap-shaped foliage. In spring, the new arching leaves form beautiful dense clumps that structure the bed even before flowering. In summer, the upright flower stalks add height and movement. In autumn, the foliage turns yellow before dying back, leaving the rhizomes dormant.
