Help and solutions:

Everything You Need to Know About Rainbow Clematis in a mix of colors (Clematis) – flowering climbers

Rainbow Clematis: Do these clematis bloom in their first year?

Supplied as well-established 9 cm pot-grown plants, these clematis may produce their first flowers in the same season they are planted, provided they receive the right exposure and watering. However, flowering becomes more abundant in the second and third years as the plants fill out: this is typical of clematis, which become more spectacular each year. Depending on the variety, flowering lasts from spring to autumn.

How tall can these clematis grow when mature?

The clematis in this assortment reach 2 to 4 meters at maturity, making them ideal for a fence, trellis, pergola, or arch. Growth is rapid once the plant is established: expect 1 to 1.5 m of growth per season in favorable conditions. Provide a sturdy support from the time of planting.

Can these clematis be grown in pots on a balcony or terrace?

Yes, the young Ø9 cm size is well suited for starting off in a pot. Eventually, choose a container of at least 30 to 40 litres per plant, a rich, well-draining potting mix, and install a support (trellis, obelisk, or mesh) at planting. In a pot, watering is more frequent than in the ground, and a fertilizer for flowering plants from March to September supports blooming. Keep the pot in the shade, with the top of the plant in the sun.

How to prune these clematis without losing the blooms?

This assortment combines varieties from groups 2 and 3. The safe rule is a moderate late-winter pruning: remove dead wood and shorten the stems above a pair of swollen buds, without cutting back too short. If you identify a variety from group 3 (late summer flowering on first-year shoots), you can cut it back more severely to 30–50 cm.

Which plants should I pair with these clematis in the garden?

These clematis pair particularly well with climbing roses, with which they share supports and fill in any gaps in flowering. Their colors harmonize with lavender, ornamental sage and perennial geraniums at the base of a wall. To protect the roots from the heat, plant a discreet ground cover (such as lady's mantle or heuchera) or grow them on a lightly flowering shrub, which they will dress with color without outcompeting.

When to plant these clematis in the ground?

The ideal planting time is in spring (March to May) or autumn (September to October), avoiding frost and heatwaves. In practice, potted plants can be planted all year round as long as the soil is neither frozen nor scorching. Planting in autumn, when the soil is still warm, promotes root establishment before winter and prepares the plant for more generous flowering the following spring. Remember to bury the crown 5 cm deep when planting.

Are these clematis resistant to clematis wilt?

Clematis wilt, caused by the fungus Phoma clematidina, is the main disease affecting the genus. Proper planting greatly reduces the risk: bury the crown about 5 cm below the surface, so that in the event of an attack, the underground buds allow the plant to regrow the following season. Well-drained soil and watering at the base (without wetting the foliage) also limit problems.

The essentials about Rainbow Clematis in a mix of colors (Clematis) – flowering climbers

Rainbow Clematis (Clematis): characteristics and benefits

The Rainbow Clematis (Clematis) collection brings together climbing clematis in a variety of colours for a colourful vertical display that is easy to create. It combines large-flowered climbing clematis selected by the grower in a range of multicoloured varieties that bloom in succession from spring to autumn.

Where to plant Rainbow Clematis: exposure and hardiness

Rainbow Clematis should preferably be planted in full sun or partial shade, with at least 5 to 6 hours of light per day. The golden rule for clematis applies: the head in the sun, the base in the shade. A thick layer of mulch or a low-growing plant protects the roots from summer heat, while the hardy rootstock, resistant down to -20°C, survives winter without protection. Discover our full selection of climbing plants sourced directly from our partner growers.

How to care for Rainbow Clematis?

  • Soil: moist, rich and well-drained. Improve with compost and bury the crown by 5 cm when planting. Avoid heavy, waterlogged soils.
  • Watering: regular during the first season, then reduced once the plant is established. In a pot, water as soon as the surface of the growing medium dries out.
  • Pruning: moderate pruning in late winter, suitable for groups 2 and 3.
  • Support: install a trellis, wire mesh or arch at planting; the clematis climbs by wrapping its petioles around thin supports.

Rainbow Clematis in the garden: flowers, foliage and combinations

Depending on the package chosen (8, 12 or 16 plants), Rainbow Clematis covers a wall, fence or pergola with a cascade of flowers. Its deciduous, plain green foliage densely covers the support from late spring until autumn.
