Help and solutions:

Everything You Need to Know About Chinese Wisteria 'Prolific' (Wisteria sinensis) - fragrant blue wisteria

Does the 'Prolific' wisteria bloom in its early years?

This is its main quality: the RHS describes it as a wisteria that flowers at a young age. Delivered as a 65 cm young plant, it needs one or two seasons to establish itself, then the first bunches generally appear fairly quickly if it receives full sun and is pruned twice a year. However, a plant that is too shaded or overfed with nitrogen can delay its flowering.

What is the difference between glycine from China and glycine from Japan?

Chinese wisteria (Wisteria sinensis) twines counterclockwise, flowers before the leaves appear, and opens all its flowers at the same time on racemes about 30 cm long. Japanese wisteria (Wisteria floribunda) twines in the other direction, flowers slightly later, and has longer racemes that open gradually. 'Prolific' is a Chinese wisteria.

How to prune a wisteria so that it flowers well?

Prune twice a year. In July-August, cut back the long shoots of the year to 5 or 6 leaves to limit their vigor. In January-February, cut these same shoots back to 2 or 3 buds: these short spurs will bear the clusters of the following spring. The large round buds are flower buds, which should be preserved.

How many wisteria plants should I plan for a pergola?

A single glycine can eventually reach 8 to 12 m in height and over 8 m in width, but it takes several years to get there. For a garden pergola, one plant at each corner post gives a faster and more balanced result: a pack of 2 or 4 plants is suitable. For a fence, allow one plant every 1 to 3 m depending on the desired effect.

Is glycine toxic to cats and dogs?

Yes. All parts of the wisteria plant are toxic if ingested, especially the pods and seeds that develop after flowering. They can cause vomiting and digestive problems in dogs, cats, and children. We recommend cutting off the withered flower clusters before pods form if animals visit the garden.

Can a 'Prolific' wisteria be grown in a pot on a terrace?

It is possible but demanding, as glycine is very vigorous. You need a large container of at least 50 to 60 liters, a sturdy support, regular watering, and severe pruning twice a year to keep it under control. The flowering is generally less abundant than when planted in the ground. For a terrace, planting in the ground at the foot of a pergola remains the best option.

Can a wisteria damage a house or a gutter?

Its stems do not cling to the wall but wrap around anything they find, including gutters, cables, and shutters, which they can deform as they grow. Install it on a freestanding support (tensioned cables, wire mesh, or pergola), at least 50 cm from the wall, and guide the stems away from downpipes and tiles each year.

The essentials about Chinese Wisteria 'Prolific' (Wisteria sinensis) - fragrant blue wisteria

Chinese wisteria 'Prolific' (Wisteria sinensis): characteristics and benefits

The Chinese wisteria 'Prolific' (Wisteria sinensis 'Prolific') is a Chinese wisteria cultivar known for flowering more profusely than the typical species, with longer and more pointed racemes. Its blue-purple racemes of 25 to 30 cm give off a powerful fragrance, and all the flowers on a raceme open almost at the same time: the 'cascade' effect is immediate. The RHS has awarded it its Award of Garden Merit and highlights that it flowers at a young age.

Chinese wisteria or Japanese wisteria: how to tell them apart?

The Chinese wisteria (Wisteria sinensis) twines in an anti-clockwise direction and opens all its flowers together, on racemes of about 30 cm, before the leaves. The Japanese wisteria (Wisteria floribunda) twines in the other direction and bears often longer racemes, up to 50 to 60 cm in some varieties, which open gradually from top to bottom, a little later. For a massive and early effect, Chinese wisteria is the best choice.

How to plant and prune the 'Prolific' wisteria?

  • Planting: from October to April, when frost-free, at least 50 cm from the wall, with a solid support installed from the start.
  • Soil: fresh and well-drained, enriched with compost; avoid very alkaline soils that yellow the foliage.
  • Summer pruning: in July-August, current year shoots cut back to 5 or 6 leaves.
  • Winter pruning: in January-February, same branches cut back to 2 or 3 buds to form the flower spurs.

All the details of these two prunings are in our wisteria guide: planting, pruning and flowering.

Why a wisteria does not flower, and how to avoid it

The causes are almost always the same: too much shade, excess nitrogen fertilizer that promotes foliage, lack of pruning, or the plant is too young. With 'Prolific', selected for early flowering, full sun and the two annual prunings are usually enough. A supply of potash-rich fertilizer in spring also helps flowering.
